What is Oncology Massage?

Oncology massage is a specialized form of massage therapy designed to support individuals who are dealing with cancer or its aftermath. Our therapists at Bodywork Therapy Killarney are trained to adapt their techniques to address the physical and emotional changes that cancer treatments can bring about. With a deep understanding of the body’s responses to cancer therapies, we aim to provide a safe and soothing experience.

What does it cost?

My Oncology Massage treatments are €50 euro for a 45 minute session, €60 for a 60 minute session or €90 for a 90 minute session.

Benefits of Oncology Massage

  • Pain and Discomfort Relief:
Cancer treatments can often result in various forms of pain and discomfort. Oncology massage helps alleviate these symptoms, providing much-needed relief.
  • Reduced Anxiety and Stress:
A cancer diagnosis can bring about high levels of anxiety and stress. Our gentle massage techniques promote relaxation and a sense of calm, supporting emotional well-being.
  • Improved Sleep Quality:
Oncology massage can aid in improving sleep patterns, contributing to better rest and overall wellness.
  • Enhanced Circulation:
The gentle strokes of oncology massage encourage blood flow, helping to counteract circulation issues that may arise from cancer treatments.
  • Nausea Management:
Certain massage techniques have shown promise in helping manage nausea and discomfort associated with chemotherapy.
  • Improved Quality of Life:
By addressing both physical and emotional aspects, oncology massage contributes to an improved overall quality of life for individuals navigating cancer.

My approach

I approach oncology massage with the utmost care and respect for your unique journey. Before your session, I’ll conduct a thorough consultation to understand your medical history, treatment plan, and specific needs. This enables me to tailor my techniques to provide you with a safe, comfortable, and effective experience.

I am certified and trained in oncology massage, ensuring that you receive expert care in a tranquil and nurturing environment. Your comfort and well-being are my top priorities, and I’m committed to providing you with a soothing escape from the challenges of cancer treatment.

Precautions/Contra-indications

Light massage is safe for most people with cancer, but there are some settings in which massage therapy should be avoided altogether among people with cancer. Some of these include:

  • Known blood clots: Massage should not be done if you have been diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary emboli.
  • Infection: If you are currently fighting an infection, especially if a fever is present, massage therapy should not be used.
  • Severely low white blood cell count: If severe leukopenia is present, massage therapy should be deferred until an oncologist gives the clear
  • Severe thrombocytopenia: If you have very low platelet counts, massage therapy should not be performed.
  • Lymphedema: Lymphedema is a relative contraindication to massage. Swelling of a part of the body due to damage to the lymphatics can occur with several types of cancer (especially melanoma), but is most well known as the arm swelling that occurs in some women with breast cancer. If lymphedema is present, a type of massage called manual lymphatic drainage may be needed, but this is usually performed by a different type of therapist who specializes in the treatment of lymphedema (I am not trained in or offer this type of massage treatment).

Therapy should also avoid sites of active tumor growth, areas around a recent incision, and any areas where an open wound or sore is present. During chemotherapy, deep tissue massage should be avoided even if blood counts are all normal.
